Your venue is the single biggest decision you’ll make, because it shapes your date, your guest numbers, your budget and your style all at once. Here are the things we’d encourage every couple to weigh up before they sign.
Capacity and layout
A room can hold a number on paper and still feel wrong in practice. Think beyond the headline capacity: is there space for a ceremony and a reception, room for a dance floor, somewhere for guests to mingle between the formal moments? If you’re planning a large celebration, ask specifically how the space works at full numbers.
Location and travel for guests
Consider where your guests are coming from. Venues in and around the Central Belt — Glasgow, Edinburgh and the towns between — are easy to reach, while a remote estate or castle is breathtaking but may need transport and overnight accommodation factored in. Neither is wrong; just plan for it.
What’s included — and what isn’t
Two venues at the same headline price can be very different once you read the detail. Ask what’s covered: tables and chairs, in-house catering or external suppliers, staffing, set-up and clear-down time. Exclusive hire of the whole site is worth confirming if you don’t want another event running alongside yours.
The rules you need to know early
Every venue has restrictions, and they’re easier to work with when you know them up front.
- Can you bring your own caterer and décor suppliers, or is there an approved list?
- Are open flames, candles or certain installations allowed?
- Is there a noise curfew or a fixed finish time?
- What are the access times for setting up on the day?
Light, backdrop and photographs
You’ll look back on your photos for decades. Visit at roughly the time of day your wedding will take place and notice the natural light, the backdrops and the spaces that feel most “you”. A beautiful venue makes every other detail easier.
Accessibility and the Scottish weather
Make sure the venue works for every guest, including anyone with limited mobility. And because this is Scotland, always have an indoor option — a confirmed wet-weather plan turns an anxious morning into a non-event.
The best venue isn’t always the grandest one — it’s the one that fits the day you actually want to have.
We’ve worked in venues of every kind across Scotland, and we’re always happy to share honest, practical advice. If you’d like a second opinion on a shortlist, our planning and co-ordination team is here to help.
